About the Centre for Global Epilepsy

Epilepsy affects over 50 million people worldwide, with 80–85% living in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). In Africa alone, an estimated 10 million people have epilepsy, with incidence rates significantly higher than in high-income settings due to perinatal risks, infections, and brain injuries. Despite being a treatable condition, most individuals in resource-limited settings lack access to diagnosis and affordable anti-seizure medications, while stigma and misconceptions further compound the burden.

Recognising the urgent need for action, the World Health Organization has identified epilepsy as a public health priority through its Intersectoral Global Action Plan (IGAP) on epilepsy and other neurological disorders, which calls for improved access to care, increased awareness, and stronger health system integration. In response to this need, the Centre for Global Epilepsy was established at the University of Oxford in October 2024, based at Wolfson College. Building on Oxford’s longstanding contributions to global epilepsy research, including the Epilepsy Pathway Innovation in Africa (EPInA) and the Oxford Martin School Programme on Global Epilepsy, the Centre serves as a collaborative hub for advancing epilepsy research and care worldwide. These pioneering projects laid the groundwork for a comprehensive, integrated approach to tackling epilepsy in resource-limited settings and provided the foundation for the Centre’s mission.

Generously supported by the BAND Foundation, our mission is to empower global epilepsy research and care together by:

  • Building a global network of researchers, advocates, and clinicians working in resource-limited settings.
  • Leading capacity-building initiatives to strengthen research and healthcare infrastructure.
  • Developing culturally contextualised tools and techniques to improve diagnosis, treatment, and patient outcomes.
  • Working alongside people affected by epilepsy and their communities to challenge stigma and promote awareness.

By fostering an ecosystem where research, clinical expertise, and advocacy intersect, we aim to create lasting, meaningful change in global epilepsy care.
